Obituary

Gary G. Barber passed away July 9, 2022, after a long struggle with COPD surround by his wife Lois, daughters Tammy and Amy, and several grandchildren.  Gary was born in Mitchell, SD to Dale W. Barber and Verna V. (LaBau) Barber on December 17, 1945.  Gary grew up on the family farm near Wessington Springs, SD with his 3 older brothers, Arlan, Mahlon and Dennis until the age of 10 when the family moved to Rapid City.  Prior to moving to Rapid City, Gary attended the Barber School located in Jerauld County for the first 5 grades.  Gary attended Canyon Lake Elementary, West Jr High and Rapid City High School graduating in 1963.  Gary also attended Lake Area Vocational Institute in Watertown, SD.

Gary's vocation and passion was in designing custom homes for his many clients in the Rapid City area as well as homes in several states.  Gary had the ability to visualize concepts and ideas to fit individual clients wishes.  The beautiful homes in and around Rapid City are a testament to that ability.

Gary was a deacon and treasurer at First Christian Church for several years.  He was a member of the Black Hawk Community Church at the time of his passing.

Dad, Grandpa Gary loved his daughters and grandchildren.  He was proud of his daughters' accomplishments and the young women they became. Grandpa Gary attended many of the grandchildren's fine arts and sporting events even though he was not a sports fan but because one of the kids were playing, he would attend whenever possible.

Gary is survived by his wife, Lois, of 57 years; daughters, Tammy (David) Ashland, Amy Barber Gurley; 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and 2 step great grandchildren.  Brothers, Arlan (Elizabeth) of San Diego, CA, and Dennis (Donna) of Rapid City, and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Mahlon and sister-in-law, Judy.

A memorial will be held at a later date.
